What is rhodium plating?

Rhodium plating

What is rhodium plating?

Rhodium is a hard, bright white precious metal. A very thin layer of it is plated onto white gold jewellery to give the bright, reflective finish you see on a new white gold ring.

With normal wear the layer gradually wears away. It shows most on jewellery worn every day, such as wedding and engagement rings. Replating restores the bright white appearance.

Why is my white gold ring turning yellow?

A common question

Why is my white gold ring turning yellow?

White gold is a mix of gold and other metals. Underneath its plating it has a slightly warm, pale yellow tone.

As the rhodium wears, that natural colour starts to show through, usually first on the palm side of a ring and along its edges. This is normal wear and does not mean anything is wrong with your ring.

Cleaning, polishing and replating

What is involved

Cleaning, polishing and replating

A full refinish usually has three stages:

  • Cleaning to remove everyday dirt and residue
  • Polishing to reduce surface scratches and marks
  • Rhodium plating to restore the bright white finish

We explain the work recommended for your piece when we inspect it.

Have your settings checked at the same time

Wedding and engagement rings

Have your settings checked at the same time

Wedding and engagement rings take the most everyday wear, so they are the pieces most likely to need replating.

A replating visit is also a good time to check the claws and settings. Worn claws can put a diamond or gemstone at risk. If we spot anything while examining your jewellery, we will discuss it with you.

Frequently asked questions

Rhodium plating FAQs

How do I know if my ring needs rhodium plating?

A loss of the bright white finish, or a warm yellow tone showing through on the areas that get the most contact, usually means the rhodium layer has worn.

How long does rhodium plating last?

It depends on how often the piece is worn and what it comes into contact with. Rhodium plating is a surface finish, so it does not last forever. Rings worn every day wear fastest. Earrings and pendants see less contact and usually keep their finish much longer.

Can you rhodium plate engagement and wedding rings?

Yes. Bring your white gold rings into the shop and we will assess them and advise on the right treatment.

Will my jewellery be cleaned as well?

Cleaning and polishing are normally part of the process. We explain the work recommended for your piece when we inspect it.

Does a white gold ring need replating after resizing?

Usually, yes. Resizing and polishing can leave the finish uneven around the join. Our ring resizing page explains more.
